How to use your Freezer efficiently

Fridge, in general includes a freezer unit also It is called as the fridge-freezer. In fact a freezer consumes a lot of energy and hence one must know the method of using the freezer efficiently. They serve us to store food efficiently thereby helping us to avoid wastage of food unnecessarily. A fridge freezer has become an important domestic appliance in every household for the past couple of years.

The following points give us an idea about running the fridge freezer efficiently thereby saving the energy.

1. You can save energy by using a Savaplug that will limit the flow of energy to the freezer when it is not working hard. This plug is developed by the Department of Energy and can be used for the freezers and fridges.

2. In case you find condensation on the outside of the freezer and if there is more ice inside or if you find that the freezer is not working properly, then you must check the sealing. Also, check if there is any leaking towards outside. If you find any defect in the sealing then it is better to replace the door seals instead of replacing the freezer as a whole. If you find the seals to be in proper form, then the next step must be to check for the interior temperature, which should be around 18°C.

3. It is always better to nearly fill up the freezer. If there is lot of space inside the freezer then the coils work harder to cool the entire area. Therefore, in order to save the energy the space must be nearly filled. You can try to fill the space with fruits, vegetables, food items or at least with thick plastic covers filled with water if you do not anything to fill the space. In short up to 75% of the space must be filled.

4. Freezer must be defrost regularly. Some of the freezers come with automatic defrost settings in it. If it does not come with this setting, then do not let the ice build up more than 6mm or about ¼ of an inch.

5. Check for the door seals. If the doors are not shut tightly, then you are indirectly making the freezer to work harder as the warm air goes in and cold air comes out.The back of the unit must be kept free from dust as this is the place where we tend to concentrate on. Dust builds up easily making the freezer less efficient.

6. See to that you do not position the freezer close to any hot sources such as sunlight or cookers. A gap may also be left between the freezer and the heat sources.

Any machine that is used efficiently for that instance will help in extending the life of the machine. Hence careful measures must be taken to use the machine as per the guidelines given by the manufacturer.
